International Quilt Festival Exhibit 2019
After Christmas 2018, I challenged myself to use up my scraps so I started making 11" log cabin blocks from all the colors I had in my stash. For about 8 days, that was all I did. I remember my husband pushing (squeezing) a big comfy office chair through the doorway of my sewing room so that my back would stop hurting so much ...because I was at my machine for 8+ hours a day working on this enormous, ambitious project!
My goal was to not buy a single fabric for this quilt, and I succeeded. Even the back was constructed using bits and pieces from around my sewing room. I thought that by making this quilt, I would finally use up all the scraps in my scrap bins once and for all, but somehow, I didn't even make a dent (this should not have surprised me)!
In January, the International Quilt Festival began planning an exhibit called A Celebration of Color, and this quilt fit all the requirements. To my delight, it was accepted into the exhibit and was shown in Chicago, IL and Houston, TX in 2019.

I quilted this on my first longarm, a hand-guided, non-stitch-regulated Gammill Premier, using Hobbs Tuscany 100% wool batting. The pantograph I chose was called Bountiful Feathers by Hermione Agee, one of my favorites because I loved the density and it was really fun for me to quilt out. Something about getting to bounce the machine around all those little points gave me great satisfaction, and it almost tricks the eye into thinking it is all free-motion quilting.

Red & White Quilts Book and Exhibit at 2018 International Quilt Festival
In late 2017, I got the opportunity to custom quilt a quilt that would later be displayed in the Red & White Quilts exhibit at the International Quilt Festival in 2018. Walk This Way was designed and pieced by Carrie Nelson, and I used a mix of free-motion quilting and custom quilting using rulers. All the quilts were compiled into a book, available here.
